Radiosurgery Treatment Day: Headring Placement
The stereotactic headring is a placed on the patient early in the morning on the day of scheduled radiosurgery. The headring provides a rigid frame of reference for the radiosurgery team to use in localizing the lesion within the patient's brain. With this ring in place the radiosurgery team can target any lesion in the brain with an accuracy of less than 1 millimeter!
Most people have little or no difficulty during the placement of the headring and describe it as being similar to visiting a dentist.
After the head ring is applied, a CT scan (some call it CAT scan) is obtained using the points of reference provided by the headring. The radiosurgery team then analyzes this CT scan with a very sophisticated computer and software program to target the lesion. Once the lesion is targeted, its coordinates are programmed into the LINAC (LInac ACcelerator) Radiosurgery system. The patient, with headring still in place, is asked to lie down on the treatment couch of the LINAC.
